Dirsko J.F. von Pfeil
Originally from Germany, Dr. von Pfeil underwent post-graduate training (internship, residency & fellowship) at Kansas- and Michigan State University. During that time he also finished his dissertation on biomechanics of orthopedic implants and obtained the American DVM. Prior to joining Veterinary Specialists of Alaska in 2008, he worked at KSU as assistant professor, teaching orthopedic, soft tissue, oncologic and neurological surgery. He is a double-board certified surgeon and Diplomate of the American and the European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons, serves as adjunct professor at MSU, and on the board of referees for multiple international peer-reviewed veterinary journals. Nationally and internationally, Dr. von Pfeil is recognized as speaker on various topics in small animal surgery. Dr. von Pfeil has been the driving force to bring minimally invasive surgery to our practice (arthroscopy, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy – see advanced surgery) and led multiple challenging surgical procedures, among others cardiac pacemaker implantations (view TV report). He has developed modifications of surgical techniques to treat cranial cruciate ligament rupture (TPLO) and laryngeal paralysis. He is also certified in stem cell therapy, focusing on treatment of ligament and joint injuries. Dr. von Pfeil is a member of multiple American and European Veterinary Medical Associations, among others the International Sled Dog Veterinary Medical Association. Over the past years he has been involved as trail or head veterinarian in multiple sled dog races across Alaska.  In 2013 he was honored to receive the prestigious “Golden Stethoscope Award”, elected by all mushers of that year’s Iditarod race, as best veterinarian on the trail. One of his current research projects is congenital laryngeal paralysis in the Alaskan Husky

For family related reasons, he currently commutes on a regular basis between Berlin, Germany and Anchorage. To obtain information for his availability, please contact our front desk.
